Decisions on Geographical Names
(Historical Resources Act)
Notice is hereby given that pursuant to Section 18, Subsection 3 of the Historical
Resources Act the following decisions on geographical names were duly authorized
on July 24, 2014.
APPROVED/CONFIRMATION OF LOCATION
NTS Map Sheet 82 O/03 - "Canmore"
Lusk Creek
(creek)
NTS Map Sheet: 820/03 - "Canmore"
ATS: 15-24-8-W5
Latitude/Longitude: 51ø 02' 40? N & 115ø 01ï 48? W
Description: A tributary of the Kananaskis River.
NOT
NTS Map Sheet: 82 J/15 - "Bragg Creek"
ATS:23-7-W5
Latitude/Longitude: 50ø 29' N & 114ø 58' W
Description: A tributary of Jumpingpound Creek
This decision corrects an error found in some publications and geographical names
databases. Lusk Creek is historically understood to be a tributary of the Kananaskis
River on the National Topographical System (NTS) Map Sheet 82 O/03. The
Canadian Geographical Names Database also included a second entry for a Lusk
Creek, showing it as a tributary of Jumpingpound Creek on NTS Map Sheet 82 J/15,
which is part of a different watershed. Research determined that the second Lusk
Creek entry was the result of a cartographical error made in the 1940s. To prevent
confusion of having two identically named creeks in such close proximity, a decision
was made to confirm Lusk Creek as only a tributary of the Kananaskis River. The
record of Lusk Creek as a tributary of Jumpingpound Creek is rescinded and removed
from official inventories and databases of geographical names.
Lusk Creek is named for Thomas Lusk, an American cowboy from Texas. Starting in
1867, Lusk drove herds of cattle from Texas to Kansas and Montana. In 1895, sensing
that the ranching way of life was ending in the American mid-west, he drove a small
herd of cattle (possibly stolen) across the border into Canadian territory and
established a small ranch in the Morley region. He left a wife and two children behind
in Texas. After his arrival in Canada, he also worked as a guide for Tom Wilson and
Jimmy Simpson out of Banff. He guided Martin Nordegg into the coal-producing
Brazeau region and worked frequently as a guide for the Geological Survey of
Canada. Lusk was famed for his drinking and his legendary temper, which often
raised questions about his capabilities as a guide. However, his services were always
demanded by return clients. Towards the end of his life, Lusk returned to Texas, but
was rejected by his now adult sons. He left Texas to return to Canada, but died on the
journey.

Gourin
(locality)
ATS: 23-67-17-W4
Latitude/Longitude: 54ø 49ï 11? N & 112ø 28ï 23? W
Description: At the intersection of Highway 55 and Range Road 171, approximately
nine kilometres southwest of Plamondon and three kilometres south of Charron Lake.
Starting in 1914, this area of Alberta was settled largely by people from the region of
Brittany in France. To serve the growing population, a post office was established in
August 1923. Joseph Ulliac, the first post master, named the post office for the Breton
community of Gourin, France. A store, caf‚ and stopping house soon opened and
Gourin became a transit point and stopping-over location for trips through the area.
The name was also used for the local school district, the Gourin School District No.
4755, which was erected in January 1937, and was used to loosely describe the
surrounding region of settlement. The post office closed in July 1967. In 1970, the
Government of Alberta recommended that the name Gourin be retained, but that the
type of location be changed from "post office" to "locality." Federal naming
authorities mistakenly rescinded the name. Although the error was discovered and
acknowledged a few months later, the error was never rectified. In 2014, residents of
the area and descendants of the original settlers requested that the name be reinstated.
