GOVERNMENT NOTICES
Culture
Notice of Intent to Designate a Provincial Historic Resource
(Historical Resources Act)
File: Des. 2305
Notice is hereby given that sixty days from the date of service of this Notice and its
publication in Alberta Gazette, the Minister of Culture intends to make an Order that
the site known as the:
Stettler United Church, together with the land legally described as:
Plan RN54A (LIVA)
Block 12
Lot 1
Excepting thereout all mines and minerals
Plan RN54A (LIV-A)
Block twelve (12)
The most northerly thirty-eight (38) feet in depth throughout of Lot two (2)
Excepting thereout all mines and minerals
and
Plan RN54A (LIV-A)
Block twelve (12)
Lots two (2) and three (3)
Excepting thereout: the most northerly thirty-eight (38) feet in width throughout of
said Lot two (2)
Excepting thereout all mines and minerals
and municipally located in Stettler, Alberta be designated as a Provincial Historic
Resource under section 20 of the Historical Resources Act, RSA 2000 cH-9.
The reasons for the designation are as follows: The Stettler United Church possesses
heritage value as an early and excellent example of a United Church.
The Stettler area was first settled shortly after the turn of the twentieth century. The
area's prospects received a huge boost in 1905, when the Canadian Pacific Railway
decided to push a line from Kerrobert, Saskatchewan to Lacombe, Alberta, and to
subdivide a townsite on the homestead of Carl Stettler. The following year, Stettler
was incorporated as a town. The early community of Stettler was comprised of a
range of nationalities and religious affiliations. Among the early religious
communities were Methodists and Presbyterians who worshipped together prior to
these congregations being formally joined in the newly established United Church in
1925. Completed in January 1927, the Stettler United Church was one of the first
churches in Alberta built specifically for use as a United Church. Most other
congregations continued their services in churches which had been Presbyterian,
Methodist, or Congregationalist prior to 1925. The history of the Stettler United
Church is typical of many such churches across the Prairies. It enjoyed growing
numbers throughout its first four decades, necessitating the expansion of the sanctuary
in 1948 and the addition of a Christian Education wing in the 1960s, when United
Church membership peaked and a range of programs were offered to congregants and
their families.
The architecture of the Stettler United Church represents an intriguing transitional
style between the historicist architecture of the Methodist, Presbyterian, and
Congregationalist churches of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century and the
modernist churches of the latter half of the twentieth century. While many of the
features of the building are consistent with previous church architecture, the Stettler
United Church is distinguished from its predecessors through its simplified gothic
revival details. This difference may suggest the early influence of modernist trends in
church architecture, which are more fully realized in the 1960s Christian Education
wing. With its horizontal emphasis, flat roof, and strip of clerestory windows
wrapping around the structure, the addition clearly embodies the evolution of
architecture in the latter half of the twentieth century. Built in the 1920s and added to
in the 1960s, the church thus represents a bridge between earlier forms of church
architecture and those that would come to predominate in the years following.
It is therefore considered that the preservation and protection of the resource is in the
public interest.
Dated this 5th day of December, A.D. 2012.
