School Act

(Recently amended, new file coming soon)
The School Act sets out the goals, roles and responsibilities of Alberta’s Early Childhood Services to Grade 12 (ECS-12) education system, and identifies the roles and responsibilities of the Ministry, school boards, charter schools, private schools, teachers, parents and students. Matters that are under joint responsibility with the Ministry of Infrastructure include Real and Personal Property, Acquisition of Property, Joint Property, Buildings other than School Buildings, Expropriation, Disposition of Property and related regulations, and Delegation of Minister’s Powers.

Certification of Teachers Regulation

Practice Review of Teachers Regulation

The Practice Review of Teachers Regulation establishes how complaints regarding unskilled or incompetent teaching, and unprofessional teacher conduct, will be addressed in situations where the teacher is not subject to the Teaching Profession Act (e.g., teachers employed by early childhood services programs, private school operators, charter schools, schools operated by a council of a band as defined in the federal Indian Act (Canada). The Regulation identifies the administrative mechanisms and the procedures to be followed in the investigation of complaints, conduct of hearings and appeals, issuance of decisions, and recommendations regarding certification.

Private Schools Regulation

The Private Schools Regulation sets out requirements for the establishment and operation of private schools in Alberta, including accredited private schools, which teach the Alberta Programs of Study, and registered private schools, which teach skills and knowledge consistent with the requirements of a ministerial order on basic education in Alberta. This regulation sets out the requirements respecting student and early childhood services transportation and limits on transportation fees. Separate School Regions Establishment and Provision of Services Order

Student Evaluation Regulation

The Student Evaluation Regulation sets out the requirements for standardized evaluations of student ability, achievement or development, including provincial achievement tests, diploma examinations, and provincially-administered national and international tests.
