Teachers' Pension Plans Act

The Teachers’ Pension Plans Act outlines legislative requirements for the operation, governance, and pension plan rule provisions which apply to Alberta public school and private school teachers. The Act establishes the legal environment under which the Teachers’ Pension Plans operate, including the establishment of a plan board which has delegated functions and responsibilities pertaining to the operation and governance of the plan. Regulations under the Act provide details on all elements related to plan participation and benefit accrual under the public sector plans.

Teachers' and Private School Teachers' Pension Plans

The Teachers’ and Private School Teachers’ Pension Plans Act Regulation, together with parts of the Teachers’ Pension Plan Act, establishes the plan rules for the Teachers’ Pension Plan and the Private School Teachers’ Pension Plan. The Regulation identifies who is eligible to be a member of the pension plan, required member and employer contributions to the pension plan, rules for calculating pensionable service and the benefits to be received by the pension recipient and/or the recipient’s survivors. It also addresses matters such as early retirement, termination of employment prior to pension eligibility, cost-of-living increases, and pension payment provisions.

Teachers' Pension Plans (Legislative Provisions) Regulation

The Teachers’ Pension Plans (Legislative Provisions) Regulation sets out requirements pertaining to and the composition of the Alberta Teachers’ Retirement Fund board of trustees, the responsibilities and obligations of board members, procedures for establishing and amending pension plan rules, and reporting requirements. Other matters addressed include the payment of benefits after death and the division and distribution of benefits in the event of a relationship breakdown.
