Stray Animals Act

The Stray Animals Act describes the liability of an individual (the owner and last person in possession of livestock, or a person who opens but does not close a gate) for damages to personal property and expenses incurred related to the return of the livestock. The Act outlines the circumstances under which the capture and confinement of livestock are permissible. The licensing system for capture, confinement and or disposal of stray horses on protected public land or for the safety of the public or the horses is outlined in the Act. The authority of inspectors to approve the destruction and disposal of dangerous livestock or impound livestock is described in the Act as well as the conditions for release of impounded livestock, and sale of livestock.

Stray Animals Delegation Regulation

The Stray Animals Delegation Regulation, under the Stray Animals Act, outlines the Minister’s delegation of authority to the organization Livestock Identification Services Ltd (LIS) in relation to appointing staff, licensing, insufficient sale proceeds, and authority of inspectors under the Act and Regulation.
