AMENDMENT ACT, 2017

Chapter 31

(Assented to June 7, 2017)

Preamble

WHEREAS the Calgary Jewish Centre was incorporated by the Calgary Jewish Centre Act, chapter 55 of the Statutes of Alberta, 1983; and


WHEREAS the petitioner is praying that the Act be amended to change the name of the corporation to “Calgary Jewish Community Campus Corporation”, and modernize the objects of the Corporation, and it is expedient to grant the prayer of the petition;

THEREFORE HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, enacts as follows:

Amends SA 1983 c55

1   The Calgary Jewish Centre Act is amended by this Act.

 

2   The title of the Act is struck out and the following is substituted:

CALGARY JEWISH COMMUNITY CAMPUS CORPORATION ACT

 

3   The preamble is amended by striking out “and” at the end of the first recital and adding the following after the first recital:

WHEREAS members of the corporation were originally incorporated under the name “Calgary Jewish Centre” pursuant to this Act;

WHEREAS the Centre’s name is to change to the “Calgary Jewish Community Campus Corporation” to better reflect the objects of the corporation; and

 

4   Section 2 is repealed and the following is substituted:

Continuation

2   The Calgary Jewish Centre is continued as a corporation under the name “Calgary Jewish Community Campus Corporation” and shall consist of Bruce Libin, Gertrude Cohos and Morris Dancyger, together with such other persons as may become members of the corporation hereinafter.

 

5   Section 4 is repealed and the following is substituted:

Objects

4   The objects of the corporation shall be

                                 (a)    to promote health by encouraging and facilitating general physical fitness by operating and maintaining recreational facilities for fitness and health and wellness programs for the general public,

                                 (b)    to advance education by operating and maintaining a daycare facility, as well as providing early literacy programs, and afterschool programs for youth of both Jewish and non‑Jewish communities of Calgary,

                                 (c)    to advance education and culture by providing educational programs on Jewish history and culture, as well as Hebrew and Judaic studies, for the benefit of both Jewish and non‑Jewish communities of Calgary,

                                 (d)    to relieve poverty by providing free or subsidized educational, cultural and recreational programs to individuals in need,

                                 (e)    to relieve conditions attributable to aging by providing specially adapted residential accommodation, incidental facilities, personal care, housekeeping, meals, nursing care, counselling and other support services to Jewish and non‑Jewish seniors,

                                 (f)    to advance education and religion by establishing, operating and maintaining a Jewish day school or schools of instruction by providing educational and cultural programs on Jewish history and culture, as well as Hebrew and Judaic studies, for the benefit of the general public,

                                 (g)    to promote the efficiency and effectiveness of charitable programs for the benefit of the Jewish community by providing and maintaining facilities to house the operations of qualified donees as defined in section 149.1(1) of the Income Tax Act (Canada),

                                 (h)    to receive and maintain a fund or funds and to apply all or part hof the principal and income therefrom, from time to time, to qualified donees as defined in section 149.1(1) of the Income Tax Act (Canada), and

                                  (i)    to do all such other acts and things as are incidental and ancillary to the attainment of the objects in a way that the Income Tax Act (Canada) regards as charitable.

 

6   Section 7 is amended by striking out “Morris Cancyger” and substituting “Morris Dancyger”.
